Fletcher Place - The Community
Established in 1825 by Calvin Fletcher, Sr., Fletcher Place began as personal farmland, called Woodlawn, and was eventually plotted out in 1857. Calvin Fletcher was the first attorney in town, was on the school board, in the Indiana General Assembly, founded the American Fletcher National Bank and was a trustee of now named DePauw University. Fletcher also contributed greatly to the construction of the stunning Fletcher Place United Methodist Church. This church was built on farmland he donated and is a wonderful architectural stop on your tour of the neighborhood. Follow the diagonal lines of the streets and imagine the ringing bells of the church or the bell a trolley rolling by on it’s way from stop to stop. A tapestry of history is woven throughout the streets inside the borders of Fletcher Place, if you take the time to look around.
Modern Day Fletcher Place is a mixture of private homes, condos at Union Laundry Lofts or Fletcher at Pine, public businesses and fine dining establishments. Most of the homes in Fletcher Place were built at the turn of the century and many have been revitalized to reflect their original beauty. Side by side you’ll find an eclectic blend of 1900’s Victorian masterpieces, Cottages, Arts and Crafts and Italianate style homes.
The lawns and sidewalks are full of community minded residents who take pride in the area and work together to keep it gorgeous. The residents hold monthly association and development meetings along with gathering for many social functions throughout the year. Neighborhood and community togetherness are just a two of the many benefits to living in such a fine area.
There are vocational, public and private schools located within the district, serving the educational needs of those within. Eli Lilly and Anthem both have their world headquarters just outside the Western boarder line of Fletcher Place. A few nearby historic districts include: Pogue’s Run, Wholesale District, Lockerbie Square, Fountain Square and the Mass Ave. Arts District. Closely found entertainment venues include: Conseco Field House, Lucas Oil Stadium, Indiana State Museum, Circle City Mall and the Fletcher Place Community Center.
