Geist is the area which surrounds Geist Reservoir and spans three counties, four school districts and five ZIP codes. The Geist area provides access to four different school districts, including Lawrence, Hamilton, Southeastern and Mt. Vernon. The unique topography, waterfront views and boating access makes this area northeast of Indianapolis a highly-sought weekend retreat as well as a coveted area for permanent residence.
The 1,900-acre lake, built in 1943 by damming Fall Creek, sprawls across Marion, Hamilton and Hancock counties. The lake is named after Clarence Geist, former owner of the Indianapolis Water Company. Geist Reservoir is a manmade lake, created by the Indianapolis Water Company to provide water to Indianapolis. The Reservoir is fed by Fall Creek on the north and overflows back into Fall Creek on the south side. Although most of the reservoir is shallow, it is the only Indianapolis waterway that allows motorized boats.
