Established in 1825 by Calvin Fletcher Sr., Fletcher Place began as personal farmland, called Woodlawn, and was eventually plotted out in 1857. Calvin Fletcher was the town’s first attorney and served on the school board and the Indiana General Assembly. He founded the American Fletcher National Bank and was a trustee of the now-named DePauw University. Fletcher also contributed greatly to the construction of the stunning Fletcher Place United Methodist Church. This church was built on farmland he donated and is a wonderful architectural stop on your tour of the neighborhood. Follow the diagonal lines of the streets and imagine the ringing bells of the church or the bell a trolley rolling by. A tapestry of history is woven throughout the streets inside the borders of Fletcher Place, if you take the time to look around.
Modern Fletcher Place is a mixture of private homes, public businesses and fine dining establishments. The lawns and sidewalks are full of community minded residents who take pride in the area and work together to keep it gorgeous. The residents hold monthly association and development meetings along with gathering for many social functions throughout the year. Neighborhood and community togetherness are among the many benefits to living in such a fine area.
There are vocational, public and private schools located within the district, serving the educational needs of those within. Eli Lilly and Anthem both have their world headquarters just outside the western border of Fletcher Place.
