Over its long history, Ransom Place has been home to many influential African American civic and business leaders, doctors and attorneys. One such attorney is the area’s namesake: Freeman B. Ransom (1882-1947). His son Willard Ransom was also an acclaimed attorney in this district.
The Ransom family moved to this area in 1910. Freeman, a successful attorney, also served as corporate counsel and manager of the Madame C.J. Walker Company. Madame Walker became America’s first black women millionaire, running her flourishing beauty supply business. Now known as the Walker Theatre, Madame Walker’s building still stands as a brilliant reminder of the rich history of this area.
The Ransom Place of today is full of beautifully restored Queen Anne cottages and other historic homes from the 1890’s. Ransom Place is home to a 19th- century canal, the Walker Theatre, Crispus Attucks High School as well as the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University (IUPUI). Some campus buildings sit on historic sites including a bleaching works, cotton mill, cotton warehouse, flour mill and school No. 4, where black children were taught from the late 19th-century though the 1940s.
Ransom Place has seen changes throughout the years, but the heart and soul remains the same. From the rare African Deco styling on the Walker Theatre, which features African shields, spears, sphinxes and chimpanzees, to the charming shotgun style homes, wonderful people, rich history and warm hearts fill the streets of Ransom Place historic district.
