Located about a mile North and several blocks east of downtown Indianapolis, the Old Northside Historic District is a beautifully revitalized piece of history. During the late 19th century, residing in the “Northside” was a mark of affluence, with the area north of Fall Creek designated as the most prestigious. Well-to-do political, social, commercial, religious and educational leaders chose to build homes here. Butler University (founded as North Western Christian University) began in 1855 within the borders of Old Northside. Founder Ovid Butler called this area home, as well did our 23rd President Benjamin Harrison. The historic significance of the area is magnified when you walk through one of the home museums or gaze upon the glorious mansions and homesites located here.

The heyday of the Old Northside was around 1913-1914. World War I and WWII saw dramatic decline in the area. Over half of the original houses were subsequently demolished, prior to the rebuilding and revitalizing of the area in the late 1970’s. Brick sidewalks have been repaired, reminding us of when residents wearing expensive leather shoes and tailored garments stood along the fences and iron gates waiting to board the mule-drawn trolley.
Most of the completely renovated Victorian-era homes in Old Northsides give us clues into the areas’ rich past. Impressive brick and wood frame Italianate and Queen Anne mansions are the highlight of the architecture lining the streets. You will also find new construction homes, designed to historically fit in and compliment the older existing homes. The Old Northside of today is still as warm and inviting as it was in days gone by, yet is close to all that a bustling downtown has to offer.
